Another Destination to Kangaroo Island: Blue Mountain, Australia

The Blue Mountains is a mountainous region in New South Wales, Australia. Blue Mountains National Park, one of the most well known parks in Australia, is part of the Greater Blue Mountains World Heritage Area; listen for its remarkable geographic, botanic and cultural values, including protecting sites of Aboriginal cultural significance.

This park, which is part of the Greater Blue Mountains World Heritage Area, protects diverse range of vegetarian communities. There are rare and ancient plants and isolated animal populations tucked away in its deep gorges. The Greater Blue Mountains Drive links a vast and spectacular World Heritage landscape and a number of national parks to the surrounding regions.

The Greater Blue Mountains are is inhabited by over 400 different forms of animals. Among them are rare mammal species like Spotted- tailed Quoll, the Koala, the yellow- bellied glider, and Long-nosed potoroo. There are also some rare reptiles, like the Blue Mountain Water Skink. Some dingos also live in this area. They are predators and hunt for grey Kangaroos.

This place is famous for tourist attractions and recreational activity.

  • The Edge Cinema offers visitors a panoramic view of the Blue Mountains.The Giant Stairway walking tracks runs down a cliff into the Jamison Valley, near the Three Sisters,  providing access to nature walks through the valley.
  • Jenolan Caves, a series of limestone caves south west of Katoomba.
  • The Toy and Railway Museum at Leura.
  • The Zig Zag Railway: A steam powered railway near Lightgow.
Some recreational activities are:
  • The Blue Mountains are popular destinations for Rock Climbers, Mountain Bikers and Hikers as well as canyoning and other adventure sports.
  • Popular climbing destinations include the Centennial Glen cliffs near Blackheath, Mount Victoria, Mount Piddington, and Mount Boyce.
  • Mountain biking takes place mainly on the many fire trails that branch away from the main spine of the Great Western Highway, such as Narrow Neck, Anderson’s Fire Trail and others.
  • Canyoning in the Blue Mountains is a popular sport and caters for various skill levels. There are numerous abseiling options available in the Blue Mountains including single and multipitch routes.

The views from the park’s lookouts are magnificent. You will look out over hazy blue forest, waterfalls and interesting rock formations. Echo Point in Leura, you will be able to see 29km away on a clear day. Take a picnic lunch or thermos so you can stop for a while to admire the view.
