The Ocean Course is one of five golf courses that are part of the Kiawah Island Golf Resort. It is located on Kiawah Island, a South Carolina barrier island that abuts the Atlantic Ocean. Today, it is known as “The Pete Dye-designed Ocean Course”. The course was designed first became well known in its first year when it hosted the 1991 Ryder Cup. That Ryder Cup became known as the "War on the Shore" for the tough conditions and contentious atmosphere. Seve Ballesteros, Sir Nick Faldo, Bernhard Langer and the rest of the European team lost by the narrowest of margins to a U.S. team that included the late Payne Stewart, Fred Couples and Ray Floyd.
When The Ocean Course hosted the 2012 PGA Championship, it became just the fourth golf course to be used for all three of the PGA of America's major championships (PGA Championship, Senior PGA Championship, and Ryder Cup). The Ocean Course is a par 72, and it stretches to 7,676 from a variety of tees that go as low as 6,202 yards. The course is now open to the public.
