Rio Carnival is a wild 5 days celebration, 40 days before Easter. It usually starts on Friday and end on Fat Tuesday with the beginning of Lent on Ash Wednesday after which one is probably to abstain from all pleasures. Carnival can be thoguht as an act of farewell to the pleasures of the flesh. It usually happens in February, when the peak of Rio’s summer it is the hottest month in the Southern Hemisphere. The carnival celebrations in every corner of Brazil, taking place in Recife together with Olinda (in the North of Brazil) and Salvador. But the biggest and most famous carnival is the Carnival in Rio de Janeiro.
Favelas is one of the most involved groups in Rio Carnival which are the poorest neighborhoods. They are slums, that their houses are made of cardboard or scraps, and they are always without water, electricity and waste matter system. But, no matter how bad the situation the favelas´ home are, they join in the festival activities and they actually "make" the Carnival in Rio. Because once a year they can to go out and much as they can so the Carnival really means a lot to them.
House of the favelas are often members of a local samba school and are involved with the performance and costumes of their groups. Carnival and samba are their passion beside football of course. It was organize, glamorize, televise, even industrialize it. Rio Carnival is something that comes from the fun-loving deep soul of the Rio people. It's free, and everybody's welcome.
Book your hotel-only package. You should really organize your accommodation for the 2015 Rio Carnival well in advance. The best hotels should be booked early especially in South Rio (the Zona Sul). It is a good idea to make a reservation at least 5 or 6 months before the carnival.
The famous Zona Sul (South Rio) is the most agreeable place to stay in Rio. It is sorrounding by the sea and is the most modern part of the city. Big stage offering a carnival form happening such as Copacabana, Ipanema and Leblon at every corner.
Leblon is also an excellent location. Most hotels only offer a fixed-rate 3, 4 or 5 nights package during Carnival, against pre-payment, and these rates are significantly higher than at other times of the year.
